The Lowdown on Red Rock...
History:
Red Rock is a small holiday/recreation village with a population of about 300 permanent residents. Details regarding Red Rock's early settlement are unclear other than that it has a history of being used as a fishing village and was otherwise settled by farmers during the early 1900s. Red Rock is named after the many red rock formations that can be observed throughout the area, most notably at the Red Rock Headland and neighbouring Little Beach. The headland is infamous due to its history of being the final destination of a major massacre of the Gumbaynngir Indigenous people during the 1880s. The Garby Elders refer to Red Rock as "Blood Rock" and speak of the brutality that occurred among the banks of the Red Rock River as the indigenous people fled from mounted/armed European Police, losing their lives as they tried to swim across a river of red. A memorial can be found on the Red Rock Headland to commemorate the events that took place in the area.
What's at Red Rock:
Red Rock consists of a large recreation reserve and picnic area with playground equipment, a generous sized Caravan Park and Camping Area, a Surf Club, a Convenience/Take Away Shop at the Caravan Park Kiosk (hiring small water craft), a Bowling Club and Restaurant, a Boat Ramp and large river, and two beaches (Main Beach and Little Beach) separated by Red Rock Headland. Main Beach is a long (5.2km) patrolled beach that extends south to Corindi Headland. Little Beach is unpatrolled but is known for having smaller surf and rock pools (at low tide) which is a good option for the little ones. However, Little Beach is also known for having a strong tidal channel at the northern end of the beach at the river entrance so children must be supervised if swimming close to the river mouth. Both beaches are accessed via the Caravan Park/Surf Club entrance.
